Triumph have a brand-new adventure touring bike in their 2012 line-up – the Tiger Explorer – which is fitted with a new, 1215cc three-cylinder engine that produces 137 horsepower and 121Nm of torque. This is a high-tech machine, with ride-by-wire throttle control, switchable anti-lock brakes and traction control.
‘A tough shaft drive system has been developed for the Tiger Explorer, allowing virtually maintenance free touring. The Tiger Explorer has also been designed to go 16,000km between servicing – ideal for those long distance adventures,’ claim Triumph. ‘Having been designed for day long, mile crunching capability, rider and pillion comfort are at the heart of the Tiger Explorer’s philosophy. The rider position is easily adjustable, while accessory high and low seat options are also available. Both the screen and handlebar positions are also highly adjustable to suit individual rider preferences,’ they add.
The Tiger Explorer comes with a 20 litre fuel tank and rides on 19-inch (front) and 17-inch (rear) wheels. The tubular steel trellis frame is light and stiff and a single-sided swingarm is used at the rear, which also gets a hydraulically adjustable monoshock. A comprehensive range of Triumph accessories is available for the bike, including a two-box pannier system that provides 60 litres of luggage space and a top box that offers a further 35 litres of capacity – enough for a full-face helmet.
The Tiger Explorer, which weighs 259 kilos (wet weight) also gets a 950w generator, to facilitate the simultaneous running of multiple electrical accessories, including heated rider and pillion seats, heated grips and high power fog lights. The bike also comes fitted with a power socket situated close to the ignition, which can be used to power a GPS unit or items of heated clothing. Available colours include blue, gray and black.
