Retiring Stoner may switch to V8 Supercars

Australian Stoner stunned the motorsport world by announcing he will quit at the end of the MotoGP season for "family reasons", aged just 26.
Casey Stoner's long-term future could lie in V8 Supercars after the two-time world motorcycle champion's shock MotoGP retirement.
Stoner, MotoGP's defending champion and this year's points leader after winning two of the season's three events, made his announcement ahead of Sunday's French Grand Prix.
Stoner tested a V8 Supercar last December with championship benchmark Team Vodafone, recording competitive lap times and impressing the team.
He has received a glowing endorsement from three-time V8 champion Craig Lowndes, who worked with Stoner during his testing and believes he could successfully switch from two wheels to four.
"He's an avid follower of what we do every weekend," Lowndes said of Stoner, who is a big fan of the sport.
"The bike guys seem to cross over fairly well ... he was very determined, very focused.
"He took it very seriously.
"It's going to be very interesting to see where he ends up at the end of the year.
"He's very talented. No doubt if he crossed over, he'd bring that talent with him."
Australian motorcycling champions Wayne Gardner and the late Gregg Hansford switched to touring car racing with mixed success.
Like Stoner, Gardner was a former world motorcycling champion who took time to adjust to four wheels, though he finished third twice at Bathurst.
Queenslander Hansford won the Bathurst 1000 alongside Larry Perkins in 1993, but was killed while racing a Super Touring car at Phillip Island two years later.
Stoner said he had lost the passion for bike racing, which prompted his unexpected decision to quit.
"After a long period of thought and numerous discussions with my wife and family, I have decided to stop competing at the end of the season," the Honda rider said.
"After so many years taking part in this sport that I love, and with all the sacrifices that I have had to make, I no longer have the passion to continue and I think that it is best to stop."
Stoner, who also won the world title in 2007 with Ducati, became a father for the first time in February when his wife Adrianna gave birth to a daughter.
Despite his blistering start to the season, Stoner has been critical of a series of technical changes to the sport he claims are undermining the championship.
He has also been battling cramps in his arms that prove particularly painful under braking.
Nine-time world champion Valentino Rossi, one of Stoner's great rivals, said he was shocked by the Australian's decision.
"It's bad news for the world of MotoGP," Rossi said.
"At the end of the season, we are going to lose a great rider and a great rival, but it's his decision."

Rossi, Lorenzo shock as Stoner quits,Casey Stoner to retire after MotoGP season

Rossi, Lorenzo shock as Stoner quits,Twice world motorcycling champion Casey Stoner stunned the sport on Thursday by announcing he will quit at the end of the season for "family reasons".

The 26-year-old Australian, who has won 35 MotoGP races in his career and leads the current standings after winning two of the season's three events, made his announcement at a news conference ahead of Sunday's French Grand Prix.
"After a long period of thought and numerous discussions with my wife and family, I have decided to stop competing at the end of the season," said Honda's defending champion.
"After so many years taking part in this sport that I love, and with all the sacrifices that I have had to make, I no longer have the passion to continue and I think that it is best to stop."
Stoner, who also won the world title in 2007 with Ducati, became a father for the first time in February when his wife Adrianna gave birth to a baby daughter.
At the time he shrugged off suggestions that fatherhood would dampen his love of motorcycling.
"They say you slow down when you get married, but in my first year of marriage I won the title," said Stoner on the eve of the season.
"When I found out we were having a baby, I won it a second time. I don't think that's the case (that you slow down)."
Despite his blistering start to the season, Stoner has been critical of a series of technical changes to the sport that he claimed were undermining the championship.
This year's MotoGP bikes are 1000cc as opposed to the 800cc of old, while manufacturers such as Kawasaki and Suzuki no longer field factory teams, leaving just Honda, Ducati and Yamaha with official squads.
He has also been battling cramps in his arms that prove particularly painful under braking. Those problems came to the fore in the season-opener in Qatar, where he finished third before going on to secure wins in Spain and Portugal.
Stoner joined the elite MotoGP class in 2006 with a satellite Honda team after working his way through the 125cc and 250cc ranks following his debut as a 125cc wildcard at Donington, England, in 2001.
His switch to Ducati in 2007 proved an inspired decision as he won the MotoGP season-opener in Qatar, followed by nine more victories that propelled him to the world title.
He moved to the factory Honda team last year and clinched his second title on home ground at Phillip Island, having already won nine races. Stoner closed the season with a 10th victory in Valencia.
Nine-time world champion Valentino Rossi, one of Stoner's great rivals, said he was shocked by the Australian's decision.
"It's a huge surprise to me as it is for everyone else," said the Italian. "It's bad news for the world of MotoGP.
"At the end of the season, we are going to lose a great rider and a great rival, but it's his decision."

Flammini:Rossi will soon join with Superbike?

In an interview alongside his father Graziano, for Italian TV show Le Lene last month, the elder Rossi said that his son is following the WSB championship with interest and would race a superbike after two to four more years in MotoGP.
Now the two Flammini brothers behind the championship, Maurizio and Paolo have joined in by claiming that the desirable racer will be coming to one of their series in the future, but it is more likely to be their Superstars touring car championship.
"I don't know if Rossi will come to WSBK, but I'm convinced we will have him in our family soon enough, in our automobile racing series," Maurizio said in an interview with Italian magazine Riders, as quoted on GPOne.
"MotoGP wants to try and be like Formula 1, but without Rossi they would be nowhere. But superbike hasn't copied anyone, and indeed some of the car racing series have actually copied us. Flammini Racing has organized the Superstars series for a few years now, and there are five former Formula 1 drivers on the grid, and nine different manufacturers. The paddock is completely open and fan friendly, and the racing is very exciting."
Rossi's move to World Superbikes could be motivated by the success of Carlos Checa and Max Biaggi who became champions in their late 30s, Ducati's proven record in the series along with rekindling a hard-fought rivalries.

Preziosi : Finally Ducati Desmosedici GP12 engine Complete package in Laguna Seca

Testing plans in the quest for improved engine driveability and stated that Laguna Seca could see some big changes to the Desmosedici.

Speaking about Valentino Rossi’s seventh place at last weekend’s Grande Prémio de Portugal Circuito Estoril, he said: “I think the result yesterday is based mainly on the smalls step taken between one practice session and the next, keeping the same basic bike set-up and just trying to solve the small problems that you have practice by practice. Of course the result is better than before, but it is not at the level we are expecting, so we know we have to close the gap.”

Both Ducati riders have made it clear that the Ducati engine is producing so much power, that it is in fact a deficit when trying to get the best handling out of the bike. Preziosi outlines Ducati’s plans to overcome this issue: “We are working on improving the driveability. One of these items is an engine that has more torque at low rpm and less power at high revs. Usually this kind of engine gives better driveability. For the engine we have now, we have a lot of torque even at low rpm, and in fact we are not opening the throttle body at low rpm, because the torque is more than the chassis is able to use. So for that reason there is a question mark that only our riders can answer - if it makes sense to add more torque and less top power, even with this kind of engine? So we are very interested to test this engine to get an answer to this question.”

He explains how the new engine characteristics should aid the riders out on-track: “We believe that the engine driveability will help when you are at full lean and you open the throttle. To have a smoother response could help in avoiding that, when you are on the edge, you start to spin up and the bike starts to understeer. But we are doing some other activities on the chassis side in order to reduce the understeer.”

With the post-race Estoril test cancelled on safety grounds due to adverse track conditions, timing is crucial for the Italian team. “We think that we will end up at Laguna Seca with a complete package. We have different items we think will be good, so we are optimistic about our three tests at Mugello in May, June and July. We will test this package and should be ready for Laguna. The plan is to test with Valentino in May, and Nicky in May, June and July. July is an after race test and May and June are private tests. The first test is after Le Mans. Unfortunately we cannot test it today. If the riders are happy with the changes, we are ready to supply the third engine for Silverstone with that spec.”

Not all the upgrades Preziosi and his team envisage will be ready for the first test however. “At the first Mugello test we will start to test something, but there are other things that will only arrive in June and July. At the Mugello race we will not have the total package because the engine driveability package is related to the use of the engine. The idea is to seal engine number three in Silverstone and engine number four in Laguna, according to the mileage, so will not have the total package at Mugello. This is unfortunate, because Valentino likes the race a lot and it is our home track.”

And despite a slow start to the season, Preziosi is adamant he places his full trust and confidence in Rossi and his Crew Chief Jeremy Burgess: “For sure this challenge is being done because we want to build a bike for Valentino, because we believe that a bike Valentino likes, is a good bike for all the riders. We are following the direction of what he suggests. Of course we are trying to do that at the best of our capability, which is not enough right now to be faster than Honda. But for sure we will try in the direction that Valentino shows us. We give Jeremy 100 per cent freedom to define with Valentino what the best set-up is. So as Ducati, our duty is just to supply material, and we believe that the crew chief is imperative in the box. The way of working is to put the right person in the right position and allow that person to do what he thinks is best. We can suggest what our ideas are, but the final decision, day by day, practice by practice, is made by Jeremy speaking with Valentino.”

Amazing Cal Crutchlow Tech 3 Yamaha motoGP portugal 2012

Amazing Cal Crutchlow Tech 3 Yamaha motoGP portugal 2012

Cal Crutchlow Tech 3 Yamaha came tantalizingly close to becoming the first British rider in 12 years to claim a MotoGP rostrum after a titanic battle with home favorite Dani Pedrosa in Jerez.

The Coventry rider produced the best performance of his MotoGP career in the 27-lap race to finish just 0.4s behind Repsol Honda rider Pedrosa.

Crutchlow had shadowed the Spaniard for 19 laps, exerting immense pressure on the triple world champion to try and secure Britain’s first premier class podium since Jeremy McWilliams finished third in the 2000 British Grand Prix at Donington Park.

But Pedrosa, who had never finished outside of the top two at Jerez in his MotoGP career, produced a brilliant display to hold off Crutchlow, taking the third spot behind teammate Casey Stoner and factory Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo.

Crutchlow set the fastest lap of the race with a 1.40.019 and was only 2.4s behind Stoner to register his third successive fourth place.

Crutchlow paid tribute to Pedrosa after his error free ride didn’t present the former World Supersport champion with a single overtaking opportunity.

“I can take a lot of confidence from running the pace of Jorge and Casey but I think if I wasn’t with Dani I probably would have been a bit slower,” said Crutchlow. “He was bringing me up to those guys but you have to be in it to win it. There’s no doubt about it but he is phenomenally fast round here, so to be that close I am really happy. I did 20 laps under my qualifying time and I had the fastest lap of the race so I can’t really ask for much more. Well, I could have asked for a podium but it is not that easy but we have proved we can mix it at the front and be close to the leaders. I thought I’d be further back because I don’t like this track at all. With Dani it was the big elastic band effect where I’d close in the corner and round the corner and he would pull away coming out. We know the drive of the Honda is better than our bike but we also know that Dani is 20kg lighter than me. That’s not just me. It happens to everyone with Dani. It was difficult but I learned a lot riding wise. His experience paid off. There is only so much you can do with our package as well. Don’t forget we are a couple of steps down from the factory guys and the Honda is a factory bike, so to be up there and be that close I’m happy enough.”

Stoner, Lorenzo and Pedrosa all hailed Crutchlow’s ride after the race and complimented on his rise to prominence after a tough rookie campaign in 2011 on Yamaha’s 800cc machine.

Flattering it might be but Crutchlow said: “I don’t care so much about this at the moment. The thing for me is that Yamaha knows the package I have and it is not the same as the factory team and if I can carry on doing my job then maybe I can have a podium soon. I’m not thinking about this. If 10th is my 100% best and I am happy with my riding then cool.”
