The mystery of this vehement effort at exclusivity only deepens when you enter the China International Exhibition Center—nine separate, cavernous chambers seemingly arrayed around a grid of narrow plazas, but in reality, a convolution of positive and negative space that would confound an Escherite Theseus. The only thing more constricted than the foot traffic here is the air circulation, with dysfunctional air conditioning causing temperatures to hover in the high 80s, off-gassing plumbing that makes the dross trench in a Mumbai slum seem like a Waterworks showroom, and distorted music percussing through the miasma in a manner seemingly designed to procure confessions.


"We're all worried about the Chinese taking over the world right now," a public relations flack said while fanning himself. "Can you imagine what they'll be able to accomplish when they get organized?"


Probably not manufacture a car that could compete outside a captive domestic market, if the vehicles displayed here by the local firms were any indication. If the Korean auto manufacturers are the new Japanese, the Chinese are the new old Koreans—or Yugoslavs. Chinese cars showcase an almost intemperate variety of disinspiration: slathered in a tinsel factory of plastic chrome, mimicking the most contemptible designs of the past two decades (Aztek, last-gen Impala, and Hummer H1 among them), and even seeming to provide the inspiration for Bentley's ignominious EXP 9F SUV concept. Attempting rescue from this Sino-banality was Chery's linked chain of insectoid electric @ant cars that simultaneously conjured hypermiling and "Human Centipede," a baleen Geely GE that made the bilious 2006 Chrysler Imperial concept look restrained, and rumors of a semi-autonomous BYD economy car that could be called up to your doorstep with a remote control — presumably for those Chinese ashamed at their inability to employ a chauffeur.


Opposing this base morass is the local market's insatiable yen (Yuan?) for fanatical opulence, with brands like Bentley experiencing near triple-digit growth this past year. So while it may seem a non-sequitur for the storied British marque to introduce in here a special-edition Mulsanne celebrating the British Queen's Diamond Jubilee, the premiums this superlative model brings at Bentley of Beijing more than justifies the variance. Likewise for the global introduction of the champagne-chilling, dual-iPad integrated, power-activated aluminum tray table swiveling, semi-aniline spuming Jaguar XJ Ultimate Edition, the sensually and redolently upscaled Rolls Royce Ghost Six Senses Edition, the twice-as-nice/twice-the-price Range Rover Evoque Special Edition with Victoria Beckham, and yet another obligatory Bugatti Veyron variant. Also, the metempsychotic reemergence of Maybach.


If ultimate luxury isn't accessible to you, Beijing also proffered lavishness at lower price points, mainly via length. Seemingly motivated by the unmitigated displeasure of navigating the city's choked and chaotic ring roads, an immense range of otherwise masspirational vehicles are contorted at the local factory into chauffeur-ready, extended-wheelbase models: the BMW 3- and 5-Series, the Audi 4 and 6, the Mercedes E. Even Hyundai's top-of-the-bottom Equus is offered here as a chunky Limousine, with a blank panel grafted in aft of the B-pillar. But the award for audacious span must go to the new Citroen DS 9 concept, the Ming-era Great Wall of horizontality, featuring an axle-to-axle measure roughly twice that of a 13-passenger van.


Speaking of vans, we quite fancied GMC's local custom coaches, which looked from the outside like they should have been parked in the lot of the Pontiac Silverdome, billowing pungent smoke before an Eagles concert in 1979, but were kitted out inside like Piaggios, rendering them capable of ferrying a passel of Chinese executives in a style formerly reserved for the market-beloved Buick GL-8 minivan. Too bad Honda and MG couldn't recall their own Malaise Era glory with their Beijing introductions. Where late-70s Accords were almost Italian in their styling, the brand's new sedan looked like it had gout, a condition that was not aided by the fact that it appeared to feature on its fascia every single strake, vent, slant, stroke, and squint that sister brand Acura had recently banished from its model line. Worse, was the Morris Garage's jacked-up, soft-road, Icon concept which, while featuring the sloping backlight and finny tail of the classic MG-B GT, looked hyperopic and Bactrian, like a Morgan Aeromax with an Acura ZDX stuck in its throat.


Which kind of feels like a metaphor for the entire Beijing show: a mimetic mélange of memorable cues, assembled recklessly — and often cynically — and leaving you longing for an expectorant.

The new Range Rover Evoque Victoria Beckham Edition

The new Evoque Victoria Beckham Edition during a preview ahead of the opening of the 2012 Beijing Motor Show.

The Land Rover Evoque has been a home run for the British maker.  And it credits the range of customizable options offered on its first-over crossover-utility vehicle.  That carries over to the model formally being dubbed the Range Rover Evoque Special Edition with Victoria Beckham.  We’ll call it the Spice Girl edition, if you’ll allow us to save digital “ink.”

Among other things, it’s the first-ever Land Rover to feature hand-finished matte paint – offset by Santorini gloss black details and special 20-inch gloss-black forged alloy wheels with rose-gold accents. There’s also a rose-gold plated grille surround and badging.

Inside, Land Rover Spices it up with semi-aniline leather seats, door inserts and armrests and, yes, more rose-gold accents.  The look is complemented with black lacquered veneers, textured aluminum and soft-feel black finishes.

And finishing it off is a bespoke four-piece fitted leather luggage set.  You have to supply your own costumes, however.

The Spice Girl edition will feature the all-aluminum 240-hp 2.0-liter four mater to an all-wheel-drive system and Land Rover’s Terrain Response system comes standard.

The British marque promises to build no more than 200 of the Range Rover Evoque Special Edition with Victoria Beckham models, with a maximum five coming to the U.S.

“When I first started working with Gerry (McGovern, LR’s styling chief) and the design team, on the Range Rover Evoque Special Edition I did a lot of research, and created mood boards to show the team my love of timeless and classic design,” said Beckham. “ I looked at yachts, luxury jets, classic cars, movies, personalities and fashion. It’s the small detail that makes all the difference. I want everyone who gets into this car to feel special and empowered by its quality and craftsmanship. I like that it feels luxurious but also has quite a classic edge to it as well as a contemporary feel.”

Land Rover has yet to reveal a price point, but expect the posh Evoque to start at around $129,000.

Black Eyed Peas singer Will.I.Am told  Tonight Show host Jay Leno he is developing a new car company to bring jobs to the East Los Angeles neighborhood where he grew up. He even showed the sporty model he plans to turn out.

He calls the angular, low-slung car Iamauto and said it was built with ”a whole bunch of parts” from Chrysler Group. Essentially, he said, he started with a Chrysler chassis and created the body shell. Because it is built on an existing platform, the car is certified as street-legal, he said, adding that the car reflects his technological leanings.

“I’m a big technology freak and a geek and I invested my money in building my own vehicle ’cause I want to bring jobs to the ghetto that I come from,” Will.I.Am said.

Buzz has developed among some auto-industry insiders who say the car is really a modified DeLorean. Whatever it is or not, the reference to DeLorean could prove appropriate. That early-1980s car, developed by former General Motors executive John Z. DeLorean, became a rolling testament to how difficult it is to start a car company. Indeed, for every car maker on the market today there are dozens who failed.

Leno, a well-known car collector and tinkerer, said he was excited about the project and offered to test-drive the Iamauto when it is ready.

Bugatti Veyron Super Sport

The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport reached a Guinness World Records-certified top speed of 431 km/h or 268 mph. However, as Guinness notes, the cars shipped to customers are restricted to 258 mph — to protect the tires, which don’t hold up well at the higher speeds. The Veyron Super Sport has four enlarged turbochargers and bigger intercoolers; the 16-cylinder engine has a total of 1,200 horsepower and 1,106 lb.-ft. of torque. It is the fastest road car in production. The SSC Ultimate Aero held the previous Guinness record of 255.83 mph. The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, depending on production details and foreign-exchange rates, will cost between $2.4 to $2.6 million.

Hennessey Venom GT

The Hennessey Venom GT goes from 0-60 mph in 2.5 seconds. If you want to go to 200 mph, it will take another 12.8 seconds. It has a 6.2-liter turbocharged V8 with 1,200 horsepower and a price tag of around $1 million. Hennessey Performance Engineering says it has a theoretical top speed of 275 mph, but it has been tested to a top speed of just 260 mph.

Koenigsegg Agera R

The Koenigsegg Agera R has been clocked at 260 mph and does 0-60 in 2.9 seconds. The company, however, claims the 2013 model has a top speed of 273 mph. The Agera, available in left- or right-hand drive, has a Koenigsegg aluminum 5.0-liter V8 with 1,140 horsepower. The price for the 2013 model hasn’t been announced yet. Earlier versions went for about $1.6 million. Remember that the optional winter wheels and tires can add another $12,000 to the price.

SSC Ultimate Aero

The Ultimate Aero, made by SSC North America, AKA Shelby SuperCars, goes from 0-60 in 2.78 seconds and has a tested top speed of 257.4 mph. SSC says it has a projected top speed of 273 mph. It has a SSC-designed aluminum V8 engine with 1,287 horsepower. It has a ground clearance of just 4 inches but the price is a little taller, starting around $650,000.

Saleen S7 Twin Turbo

The Saleen S7 Twin Turbo is a two-door coupe with a 7.0-liter all-aluminum V8, designed by Steve Saleen. The car’s price tag in 2005 was $585,000. The Twin Turbo, with the later optional competition package, has 1,000 horsepower and goes 0-60 in 2.8 seconds. It’s been tested to a speed of 248 mph.

Koenigsegg CCX

Koenigsegg’s back, with the CCX. This car’s V8 with 806 horsepower will get up to 245 mph and only cost about $550,000. The predecessor of the Agera R debuted at the 2006 Geneva car show and was designed for the U.S. market. It was produced in Sweden from 2006 to 2010.

McLaren F1

The McLaren F1 super car hit 240 mph and went from 0-60 in 3.2 seconds in its heyday. Only about 106 were produced between 1992 and 1998. It’s famed for its batwing doors and its 627 horsepower, V12 engine. Its base price was around $970,000. Shown here is a 1993 McLaren F1.

Zenvo ST1

This is the first Danish-designed super car, offering a version for the U.S. market with a 7.0-liter BMW V8, 1,250 horsepower and a top speed of 233 mph. The base price is about $1.8 million. The company has said it will produce only three of these cars each year. It’s offered with several options, including a tool kit, a tailored car cover and a roll cage with four-point safety harness.

Noble M600

The Noble M600 is a hand-built British super car that goes from 0-60 in 3.7 seconds and has a top speed of 225 mph. It has a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine with up to 650 horsepower and the base prices is about $330,000.

Gumpert Apollo

The Gumpert Apollo debuted in 2005, designed to be a car that would be ready for both the street and the racetrack. It has a 4.2-liter V8 engine with a top speed of 225 mph. The designer, Roland Gumpert, says on the company website, “It has always been my dream to have a car with so much downforce, such aero-dynamic efficiency that you could drive on the roof of a tunnel at high speed. This car can do it.” The Gumpert Apollo hasn’t actually been tested upside down in a tunnel yet, though. Depending on the trim and options, the car runs about $300,000 to $450,000.
