Rumblings and Internet rumors of a supercharged ZX-14R for 2012 proved nothing more than hype, but don’t discount Kawi’s latest big bore offering as anything less than a beast. Expect the same sport touring comfort found on previous models with an addition of more power for the straights and improved handling for the corners. Electronics, engine upgrades and a redesigned chassis make Team Green’s big dog hypersport rocket past all who stand its way—‘Busas look out.
The “R” represents increased performance due to a larger displacement 1,441cc inline-four engine that now has a 4mm longer stroke, reworked cylinder head assembly, polished ports and lighter, stronger pistons. Tapered and reshaped head pipes help the motor breath while an all-new muffler assembly decreases noise and emissions. As a total package, the motor upgrades improve power throughout the rev range for a radically fast ride.
Keeping all that power in check is managed by a new to the 14, three-mode adjustable KTRC traction-control system that allows the rider to keep the rubber on the road no matter the riding conditions. A new slipper clutch minimizes the chance of rear wheel chatter when braking and downshifting. Enhanced disc and pad material for the radial-mount braking system reduce slowdown times and newly treated gears add transmission durability.
Since 2006, the ZX-14 chassis while fantastic in a straight line, lagged behind in the corners. Kawasaki made necessary adjustments to greatly improve handling with a stronger and narrower aluminum monocoque frame, longer swingarm assembly, revised suspension settings and 10-spoke wheels that are 3 lbs. lighter than the previous year. Finally, bodywork changes improve both look and aero.

An already well-equipped package is now even better. Whether touring across the country or reaching lighting quick passes at the strip, the 2012 ZX-14R will take riders to the limit comfortably with a long list of cutting-edge mechanical and technological improvements unavailable on the previous generation.
Available in Metallic Spark Black, Candy Surf Blue and the slightly more expensive ($200 extra) Golden Blazed Green, MSRP begins at $14,699.
