What do you say to the return of the Supra, powered by a 3.7-liter V-6 that makes right around 350 horsepower? How about a twin turbo variant making upwards of 400 horsepower?
Japan’s Best Car Magazine says “Hai!” and offers some digital ink to back it up. Their sketch of what could be the next generation Supra borrows heavily from current Toyota cues (Camry nose) and the overall shape of the FT-HS concept car that made its debut last year. Overall this seems to be a fresh and somewhat downsized take on the legendary Beast from the East and we like most of what we see.
The headlights seem too ambiguously shaped for Toyota’s top tier sports car, but there are some interesting details like the double bubble canopy (reminiscent of the FD RX-7) and front end air ducts and rear fender/hip lines that seem an homage to the last generation Supra. Also, check out that massive front opening; seems like a lot of space for just a radiator, doesn’t it? Perhaps better filled with a three-row intercooler? Given the Supra’s history with turbos and the current movement away from V-8s and towards boost — that certainly could be a possibility.
So, will Toyota build it? Seems certain they will eventually return to the sports car market — and soon. There’s already been talk of a Celica GT-Four style rear wheel drive sports car via their partnership with Subaru, so this could round out a new sports car initiative on the top end.
Plus Nissan is rumored to be updating their Z to a 370Z as well. Then there is Hyundai, who is always happy to eat Toyota’s bento box. The rear wheel drive coupe version of their Genesis sedan makes its debut next week in New York and should have very similar specs (3.7-liter V6/330-ish horsepower).
